REFLECTION ON THE TRANSITION

The weights of Robert Venturi exposed in 1966 in the book "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture," radically transformed perceptions towards modern architecture. Numerous roads began to be experienced in trying to overcome the stage of modern architecture academic and adding new values hitherto despised.

In the mid-sixties architecture was reduced to standard formulas mirrored in the canons of modern and endlessly repeated. From that moment, the proposed new possibilities in architecture, which distanced themselves from orthodox modernist ideals, materialized with great impact and consistency. This architecture which is conventionally called the postmodern has spread globally and its manifestations can be observed in everyday Brazilian cities. The culmination of these new proposals in the Brazilian scenario happened in the 80s and 90s, and even cities with a high commitment to the modern architectural thought such as Curitiba, faced these changes.

After about 30 years since the first demonstrations spoken postmodern, which began in architecture and proliferated up for all areas of knowledge, understanding this phenomenon and its materialization everyday already exist can be desired by a certain distance temporal and a little historical perspective.

With the term postmodern is intended, in this work, designate the set of processes occurring changes in the culture of modern civilization, responsible for the end of the prevalence of a universal point of view or a domain metarrelato on civilization contemporânea.O term postmodern, then, not be used as a specific architectural style, but as the sensitivity of a period in development and transformation, characterized by a critical review of industrial civilization and its modern logic, Enlightenment and positivist.

THE NEW ARCHITECTURE

Every object analysis when is isolated from its general context can produce partial or deformed points of view. This context, in addition of including the universe of events related to the object, approaches a historical zone that includes past, present and future. To comprehend the current moment of architecture we need to reconstruct the scenario of a time.

The vertiginous fall of industrial society takes with it all principles that the last two century generations, including ours, took as true and unquestionable. Modern architecture, one of the exponents of this civilization, falls apart, for its moral, esthetic and philosophic legitimating no longer exists.

We live today a transition period as much or more important that the industrial revolution that is not limited to architecture or art. A new civilization is emerging not on someone's will or on the imposition of the "magna carta" or even on the decision of a crushing majority. The reason of the change is apparently simple: the structure of modern society, created on an industrial model, is not built to the new current ways of living, thinking, producing, etc.

Although we live this process intensely, we are not conscious of it. Some people, with their attitudes, collaborate to this change; others, ingrained in the mechanical culture dogmas, experience this transition in a more painful way.

In the code of all this vanishing culture are the principles (1) of patterning, synchronizing, maximizing, concentration, centralization and specialization that intend to set the modern social picture stable and predictable. The patterning of culture, costumes and needs was indispensable (we wear jeans, work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., watch the same TV shows, drink Coke); the factory ring, the school, the lunch time make society pulse in an even rhythm (synchronization of life). Maximizing seeks the quantitative evolution (biggest hydroelectric plant, biggest hot dog); we focus on quantity (market, workmanship, energy, production); we centralize quality (decisions, power, information); specialization fragmented production at the assembly line and did the same to knowledge, imagining the this Cartesian vision (divide problem into parts) would provide the comprehension of all.

This code determined the meta-language that legitimated modern architecture. The "international" style with its "type man", gathered patterning to other sectors; in urbanism, the synchronizing effects are easily noticed in rush hours and in tumbled mass transportations; what was considered superfluous was put aside for the maximizing demand the maximum utilization of spaces and materials - less is more; the concentration of market, energy and production created megalopolis and on them concentrated its activities (residential, administrative, commercial zones, etc.); controlling all these functions is centered in specific areas (polo cities, downtown) establishing an influence field; men activities were centralized (work, circulation, leisure, habitation, education). And this is the code that is now on crisis.

The apparent chaos of current events (family crisis, alternative energy, ceasing movements, reality crisis, gay revolution, ecology movements) is disconnected of the Cartesian systematic. But in a holistic and historical view, we notice that these events interact with each other characterizing a transition period in which the universe of society events is not legitimated on extinction speech and waits for a new meta-language to interpret them.

In transitions like this that we are in, ambiguous and contradictory situation frequently occur because is presented aspects of what is not existing anymore and what is about to emerge.

The concentration on big cities is challenged by the person who lives and works in a wild region, producing what before would be considered impossible to do out of a big center; side by side to mass information (TV, newspaper) we already receive individual information (cable TV, telemetric groups); the power of quotidian de-synchronizing is revealed by creation of services that don't work in a regular hour (24-hour-ATMs, pizza delivery)

The late modern and post modern are nothing more than the manifestation of this society's changing moment, when all values are in crisis. In late modern architecture begins to demystify. The purity of simple forms is being little by little substituted by the intersection of various solids and also unmasked; buildings are more and more revealing their structure, their equipments till the point that those become architecture themselves. The architect was no longer the world's savior and practiced architecture just to practice it.

Simultaneously, post modern emerge as a protest speech ("less is bore") regarding the modern dogmas. Is a reaction against a recent past, turning back to a historic past more than to the future or present. It searches on society grants to its architecture – on the contrary, modern authoritarian production or the late modern isolation – trying an approximation to popular language. Its approach is still casual. In relation to modern, men adapt to city: the city is the cause, the behavior is the effect. The mechanical relation cause/effect goes on.

Late and post modern, as being water divisors, assume sometimes modernist characteristics (even in denial) and sometimes a new sensibility. In this way, any attempt to label or classify this transition architecture fragments its vision turning difficult its analysis.

"The important thing is that these architectonic postures always considered as the main basis the truth net of our civilization, OU SEJA, our basic principles of time, space, science, political evolution, economy, etc." (2); (the esthetic of a office building is discussed; it must be post, late or modern, but still is a office building).

The late and post modern don't present a final idea, being far away of characterizing a new era's meta-language. The new civilization can only be visualized if we throw out values which we are conditioned to. The new code is being built and its consequences are as predictable as were the ones provoked by the industrial code. Visualize them is as hard as it was to a precursor from industrial period.

Our job is to distinguish in this entangling of contradictions the meta-language, new ways of life, new architecture. Our destiny is to create.

ARCHITECTURE FOR FOCUSED RETAILER SECTOR GETS ATTENTION OF BRAZILIAN ENTREPRENEURS

The architecture facing the retail industry, frequently used in Europe and especially the United States, is increasingly gaining the attention of Brazilian businessmen. Just over a decade, supermarkets, appliance stores and clothing, magazines and megastores have been investing heavily in improving the design and aesthetics of establishments. According to the architect Frederick Carstens, the architecture performs the supermarkets are making major investments in different stores, in order to please the public, increase sales and build market. "Only in Curitiba, this segment last year handled about $ ... million in 2002, with the opening of 8 supermarkets, of which 3 were hypermarkets," he notes.

For Frederick Carstens supermarkets have to offer something more to the customers besides variety, quality and price, otherwise they will prefer to buy the competition. "The environment is crucial, since the consumer is demanding and looking for places to buy nice and welcoming" comments. The architect explains that all restructuring project of a grocery store with a previous study involves market analysis, public profile and location. "The architect's work also includes the shop lighting, choice of colors, distribution of gondolas up the circulation and display of products by customers," he explains.

Architecture value products

The Casa Fiesta, which starts on the seventh of October its second shop in Curitiba, did research on the profile of the residents of Champagnat neighborhood where is located. The region already has other consumption, but nothing like the model that will be deployed by Marcelo Fontana Breda, chief financial officer.

According Breda, the major difference of the new supermarket is a sophisticated range of products with affordable prices. "It will be a grid convenience store with supermarket prices," he explains. The architectural design, which prioritized the highlight of the products, is signed by Frederick Carstens and Antonio Goncalves Junior, who command Performs Architecture. According to Carstens, the architecture is able to maximize sales potential by facilitating the reading space by user and by proper positioning of products and services. "We decided to use light colors that convey the message with greater intensity of care and services it proposes the establishment," he says.

Another challenge in the projection of the store, according to the architects was to make efficient flow and functionality of the space, since the site will also be available as a gallery of locksmith services, pharmacy, photo, cafe, post office, lottery, laundry, florist and even a restaurant that will work for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. "We've developed a unique project, with the inclusion of other services to meet the most demanding consumers, who are keen to combine practicality time of purchase," says Carstens, also responsible for the design of new network store, which will open next year in Curitiba.

A renovation project of a store about three thousand square meters can cost $ 1.5 million. "But a lot depends on the area and the total investment," says Carstens. Since the construction of a hypermarket with a total area of 30 thousand square meters and sales area of 7,500 m² require investments of $ 25 million. On average, the architectural costs of 2% to 3% of the amount invested in the renovation or construction.

Paraná is the second most competitive

The expectation of Paraná Association of Supermarkets (Apras) for the supermarket sector in 2003 is for growth of around 1% in the previous year. The recovery in sales is due to the heating of retail demand in the last quarter traditionally better for trade, because the holiday season. Moreover, the Paraná had a good performance of the agricultural harvest during the year, which contributed to sales in the supermarket sector. "We had a superior result to other states. According to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the Paraná is one of five states that showed positive values in sales," said Valmor Rovaris, superintendent Apras.

In addition to highlighting the volume of sales, the supermarket sector in Paraná, which has 2370 stores, is the second most competitive in the country, second only to São Paulo - which has 4800 firms and over ten thousand stores. The turnover of the sector in Paraná, which employs 46,150 workers directly and 130,000 indirectly, reached R $ 6.2 billion last year. "We are the fifth state in sales and second in number of stores per population, with one for every 4,000 inhabitants," says Valmor Rovaris.

Investment Focus

Curitiba was the major focus of investments in 2002, when three new hypermarkets were opened, the Condor Civic Center, the Muffato in the Water Gate and Angeloni Green, plus three new supermarkets of Sugarloaf and two Superpão. According to the annual report of the magazine Modern Supermarket, specialized publishing industry, the 13 hypermarkets opened in 2002 in Brazil, six are in Parana, which equates to almost 50% of this total. In 2003 investments continue and a new hypermarket settled in the district of Vila Isabel in Curitiba with Flag Wal-Mart. For October, is scheduled to inaugurate a new store at Casa Fiesta, a network that will be inaugurating yet another venture in 2004, as well as the Condor, the largest of Paraná that will open the second hypermarket in Curitiba next year. The new store will be located in the Condor Champagnat, with 5,500 square feet. As Rovaris, the expected population growth in Curitiba is the factor that drives entrepreneurs to invest in Curitiba. "Consumers are the biggest beneficiaries of the sector's competitiveness. Fierce competition reduces prices and allows a significant improvement in attendance," says Valmor Rovaris.

LIVING ARCHITECTURE

Intelligent monitoring system to house and interior projects is launched at the Casa Personnalité Show that took place from August 14th to September 28th at the Alphaville Graciosa.

Where and how to buy a terrain? Which is the appropriate style to my house? How much will it cost and how long is going to take to finish it? These are frequently asked questions by the time of building a house and which answers don’t come in a single moment, what turns the dream house into a real nightmare.

Where and how to buy a terrain? Which is the appropriate style to my house? How much will I spent and how long is going to take to finish the job? These are the most frequently asked question by the time of building a house and the answers generally not come in one single moment, what turns the dream house into a real nightmare. Architects Frederico Carstens and Antonio J. Gonçalves Jr., who lead Realiza Architecture in Curitiba, have developed a project that aside from presenting creative and high-quality solutions minimizes the job’s final budget.

The architect duo is launching it exclusively during Casa Personnalité Alphaville Show that takes place from August 14th to September 28th, at the Alphaville Graciosa, the “Living Architecture” – an intelligent assistance system to house and interior projects that includes the terrain choice, passing through project, budget, chronogram, bidding, follow up till the job execution and interior decoration. “As the intention is to create possibilities to people live in a better way, we developed solutions allying functional and ecological needs of each project to a quality architecture near to art”, notices Frederico Carstens.

According to the architect innumerous are the essential factors to a successful project and the first one is the terrain choice, where must be considerate the shedding, accessibility, equipments and available urban facilities, future value, climate and winds, and legislation and topography.

To Frederico Carstens, another important factor to develop a project is the way of life of those who are going to live in the house. “There is not a pattern of family, they have different sizes and behaviors. To each case is necessary to establish special program and flow. The number of rooms, the private and social spaces such as home theater, pool and barbeque are going to change the final budget. That is why is fundamental to define a program. Everything that is planned gets better and it turns out to be cheaper”, he says.

Frederico Carstens highlights that each house must reflect the owner’s personality. “The architect interprets the dream and makes it come true. Then a preliminary study is developed in which initial ideas are presented, with special attention to all project conditions. Every data is transformed in designs by the architect resulting in the first image of what was dreamt”, reveals. When the project is defined along with the areas, budgets and finishing, we go to city hall’s approving.
Special projects, budget and the job

According to architect Antonio J. Gonçalves Junior, the projects to provide the house with high technology and make it more COMODA, comfortable and safe must also be defined at the beginning of the process and execute by professional and specialized companies. Before the beginning of the job execution some systems should be defined such as electric (integrated energy systems and generators) and structural, hydraulics (hot/cold water, tanks), audio and video (home theater, TV, high-end), telephone (telephone, intercom, internet, cable TV, PABX), security (alarms, security cameras, distance integrate system), air conditioning and heating system (radial floor, central heater), gas and landscaping (ornamental plants, environmental character, privacy and irrigation), aside the residence automation systems and aspiration. “The budget that guides the project since the first raffs is ratified at this moment, after the definitive project. Then it will be possible to know in details how much will cost the job. The execution deadline and finishing levels will influence the final cost”, highlights.

Realiza Architecture

Realiza Architecture, in the market for 18 years, is leaded by architects Frederico Carstens and Antonio J. Gonçalves Junior. Constituted by a multidisciplinary professional team that faces architecture as an art form and cultural expression, the company develops strategic projects within four areas: corporate architecture, real estate architecture, living architecture and special projects, with notability to residential and interior projects. Realiza’s 18 years of experience added to four years of architecture esthetic research are shown by the ISO 9001 certification along to regional and national awards granted to the company, in addition to innumerous publications signed by Frederico Carstens and Antonio J. Gonçalves Junior. Realiza’s boldness and pioneering can also be observed on the most than one million of meters in built projects and on the creation of the first intelligent building and the first lofts of Curitiba – Saint Tropez Building – that was a hit in town and which concept will also be a novelty in Florianópolis with the Floripa Lofts Juarez Machado, who also signs the office.
